Synchronised Drowning
When I give the signal
the glamour begins.
Let the cold curtain
fold over you.
Tread the space heavily
and beat a black froth with your arms.
You can be confident
that my movements are mirroring yours.
Open your mouth on water
slick with small jelly life;
feel your tongue swimming
with microscopic fear.
The important thing is precision
and a bright smile.
Open your lungs
and breathe green air
stranded with weed.
Relax. After all that practice
our timing is bound to be good.
Let the mud floor tug you.
Take a last look at sunlight
streaking the oily surface above you.
Roll your eyes and sing with me
a steady diminuendo of bubbles.
