Mr Mole
You might think
burrowing through the dank earth
is no way to engender community spirit,
that the properties of moist mud
and the logistics of soil removal
would merit little comment,
but the neighbours talk of little else
than Mr Mole and his shafts
and spade work.
When he shuffles down the street
they pause to make mention
of the ratty coat
and the trail of mud he leaves behind.
This subterranean obsession
has led to talk of subsidence.
Meetings are convened
over this twitchy bundle of a man.
Mr Mole, crawling the makeshift passages,
scratching ever further
in tunnels under the neighbourhood
hears nothing of this
as he makes his slow escape.
