End
She doesn’t understand what’s going on,
And she’s been crying again,
Because in her confusion
The only thing of which she seems sure
Is that it’s all about to end.
Everything you’ve worked for,
Every compromise,
Every effort,
All for nothing.
And she doesn’t know why.
There have been no obvious events,
No great rows
Or sudden discoveries of lies and betrayal.
Nothing.
Only a slow loss of enthusiasm,
Bickering and silences.
The thing you both feared most
Was that you would get bored
And now it seems you have.
You do nothing to reassure her,
Only getting angry
At her questioning,
Accusing her of trying to change you,
Trying to make you into someone you are not.
But in her eyes
She is just trying to remind you
Of the person you were in the beginning.
Because you never used to get angry,
You were always willing to try.
But now you just drift,
Wanting not to think about it.
And every stupid little thing you do,
Every inconsiderate moment,
Every thoughtless action,
Makes her utterly miserable.
Such little things stir her up,
Such stupid little things.
And you, you are unknowing,
You cannot understand her.
You walk away
And pay the price.
But it still cuts you up
To see her upset like this,
Resentful and pacing.
But once again, you are not here,
So she still paces,
Anxious and frustrated,
And every hour you pass away from her
Her fears grow,
Until you come home,
And she seems nothing more
Than a tearful set of claws,
Expressing stupid rage
Over something that was almost insignificant
To you.
And you don’t understand why she is like this,
And you become defensive,
Saying everything but what you really want to,
Everything
But what you really want to.
And so it slowly fades
To nothing.
