A Fine Line edited by Jean Boase-Beier, Alexandra Buchler & Fiona Sampson
Arc Publications, Nanholme Mill, Shaw Wood Road, Todmorden, Lancs 0L14 6DA £11.95.
Mention should be made of a major collection of new poetry from Eastern and Central Europe, A Fine Line. This is in dual text, the original language and the English translation, edited by Jean Boase-Beier, Alexandra Buchler & Fiona Sampson. This is a substantial volume of work of high standard and considerable interest, containing Czech, Polish, Hungarian, Slovakian, Slovenian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Estonian and Latvian work. As always, it is not possible to achieve the original poem but an idea can be given of the range of talents, the sort of subjects and tone of writing. In a Czech poem by Katerina Rudcenkova, a metaphor using anglepoise lamps, 'a luminescent forest / In it a white-walled cemetery / covered with noon shadows...' is used to good effect, while the intellectual Slovenian, Taja Kramberger, has written an impressive long poem charting her father's historical position, war experiences and relationship with her, '...A deserter who could not kill and / therefore killed air, but did not strike a bird. / A fugitive from himself, / from death and from life, / forever on the run in a damned / triangle of survival...'
