Sadegh Hedayat
Sadegh Hedayat was born in 1903 in Tehran, Iran. After finishing high school he travelled to Paris for further education but in Paris jumped into the river to kill himself. They saved his life and he went on to write The Blind Owl, The Stray Dog, Three Drops of Blood, The Advantages of Being a Vegetarian, and other works. He also published research on the works of Omar Khayyam and Jean Paul Sartre. Hedayat was fluent in French and introduced the work of western novelists to Iran. His approach to literature included visiting a brothel to talk to the women there about their lives.
At the age of 48 he ended his life by gassing himself. He was not married, and most of his works are about the pessimistic side of life. You will enjoy reading Hedayat only if you are well and your stomach is full – if you are suffering and depressed read something else!
