Upon Theodore's Upper Lip
I volunteer to ride, roughened
Twenty-six times,
One for each predecessor
Whose heaven was ambition.
Ambition as revenge? Bully
Hooey! I too am inept
And proud, but nurture cowardice,
Alternative revenge.
Take my breath away, please!
Self-dwarfed, coy,
Aggression corseted. Resent him –
Not my coward soul –
His moustache stiff with blood. And war-
Aroused, reassured,
He pats me, idly, regretting
Imperialism, a little.
Ride, diminished in a teddy:
I volunteer to ride,
Angel bleeding, then relieved
The world did not work out.
