A New Lens
My mother has bought a new lens for her eye
For her left one? It might be for her right one!
How am I to know!
The hospital was painted snow-white
It was fragrant...cutting disinfectant
My mother was there...I was at the end of the line
Surrounded by waters that make one seasick
The night was white with shaking dreams
Some old, some new but I could guess
The footprints in the snow by the park
Where the two young lions brought there
By a former mayor, a matter of prestige
Were coming to terms with a spartan other
The deer in the enclosure over the fence wire
Seemed confused in the infant grasses
Powdered like an early Christmas cake
My mother has bought a new lens for her eye
She left the snow-white hospital to come home
The sky was juggling snow-white circus balls
