Wicked Poems is a wonderful collection, edited by Roger McGough and illustrated by Neal Layton. It includes such diverse poets as Charles Causley, Rudyard Kipling, Margaret Atwood, Keats, Edward Lowbury, Carole Ann Duffy and Wendy Cope. The theme, as the title suggests, is mischievous, and often genuinely wicked behaviour. Laurence Binyon's Hunger strikes a serious note 'I am first and last to be felt of the living / I am hunger.' Many are witty or amusing. Macavity, the Mystery Cat is T.S. Eliot's contribution and Hilaire Belloc's Matilda is here. Helen Dunmore advises 'Better be big wicked - / small wicked gets caught, / big wicked's a billion / small wicked's nought, // big wicked chews up a city / small wicked daubs on a wall, / big wicked gets portrait and statue, / small wicked ends up in court...' She observes '...big wicked steals a country / small wicked steals from shops,...'
