Sweet Little Old Ladies
A weekly pilgrimage
to the ground floor
opposite cold cuts and cakes
sees them queuing before
the brightly coloured glass wall.
A young woman in white coat
and nurse-neat hat dispenses
requests with a precision rattle
into a giant scale pan,
wrapped or silent, glacés,
gems, pastilles or drops,
old favourites bagged
in the plump paper of childhood.
When one collapses
as they often do,
brittle and malnourished
on parma violets and soup,
bones are patted and wigs
realigned as they’re helped
to the chair by the lifts.
Hankies are worried
from thin sleeves as the sweet
that fell from the mouth
is swiftly found, glistening
like a glass eye to be popped back
between blue lips as if
it were a sugar coated soul.
