Letters to Editor (1)
I understand you have an idea to devote some space in future issues of BS to work which is ‘uncertain’, ‘experimental’; in other words work that maybe regarded as having a ‘training’ function.
I would like to suggest that such sections might sometimes benefit from having a constraint, something to sharpen the focus. We had this idea before, usefully in Volume 9 Number 3 where you challenged those of us who ordinarily make free with 5-7-5 to show what we could do when so restrained.
Two possible salutary constraints might be:
* to produce haiku that do not contain the ‘-ing’ form except as adjective or noun
* to produce haiku without verbs at all, ie employing the Japanese idea that nouns can suggest actions
For Blithe Spirit 11/4:-
(1) just before you bin them or make them into something else, post off some examples of ‘haiku in progress’ with a few comments on the difficulty you may be having bringing them in to land. What alternatives are you considering? What specific word might be a problem? And so on…
(2) there will be a section called ‘Nothing Doing?’ for haiku/senryu with no part of any verb in them - see Alison Williams’ haiku on p14 and four of David Cobb’s haiku on p18, as examples of verbless poems.
