Watercress
Meeting again, years later,
when the kids were all grown up,
yours and mine, you remembered
the watercress:
how, impatient with the weep
of the garden tap, between
lunch and coffee, suddenly
I planted seeds,
by sand-pit and washing-line,
tricycles and hamster run,
in a cracked washing up bowl
filled with gravel.
Under the slow drip, pro tem,
they sprouted, kept on growing,
unfolded rich green shine, salads,
soups, garnishes.
That was how it was,
when nothing seemed to happen.
