Cruza Fronteras
As a child he cut lines onto the sand
behind the outhouse where cicadas
chicharreaban and made his ears hurt,
with a guayaba twig in hand, he drew
these lines to keep one colony of ants
from another, and he learned to cross
barefoot between fire ant mounds,
not a single one stung him as he grew
confident. Later, when he no longer
lived in his native land, he liked to face
South, toward the orange-violet light,
and close his eyes to the winds, exiled
in a country where people did not like
to cross borders, he grew tired, sick,
as an old man he would forever change
his bed in the rented house, from one
side to another, daily, nightly, neighbors
complained of his nocturnal noises,
not knowing that yes, nightly, he rose
from his bed, stood by the window
of his room, and floated above all
the lines he had known, up to where
the lines of the earth blurred, merged
boundariless, like all veins in his body,
one blue mass, electrified, charged
with the currents of homeward longing.
