Blithe newcomers
Just a day or two in Korea, and still
Jetlagged, trying to orientate ourselves,
We take the mountain path, marvelling
At the calligraphy, among strange trees,
Of butterflies, jet-black, as big as wrens.
Suddenly, as we reach the summit
And all the wooded peaks rise and roll
Horizon beyond horizon to the east,
A familiar, wandering voice, reincarnated,
Transliterating perfectly: kŭ’ku, kŭ’ku.
