After Leaving You at the Airport
I’m driving home, eyes sore from a 3.30 start,
through the grainy darkness of a black-and-white movie.
You’re flying towards a time-lapse: five hours
refunded on arrival. For two weeks
I’ll imagine your clear summer afternoon
as I settle for a screeching December night.
The day feels upside-down. It’s only 6 o’clock
but cars and lorries tear up the silence.
I take the wrong lane at South Gyle roundabout
and I’m pulled into the City, past sleeping shops and houses.
I grit my teeth. No suitable place to turn around.
Nothing for it but to pass through the centre,
look forward to the calm on the other side.
