Pictures from an Old Suitcase
World's End
This was Country
– or what had once been such.
A few stray cows lingered still,
while scrubby hawthorn whitened hedges
beside motor cycle tracks.
We walked to World's End each Sunday,
crossing the main road, and beyond,
past safe suburban boxes,
towards an odd little chapel
until today I had forgotten.
For a year or more it drew my parents
– peripatetic worshippers, always moving on,
seeking a shade of Truth no one ever offered,
quite. Nowadays world's end is a little further,
and the chapel a housing estate.
