Resignation
I primed the office clock
like a hand grenade
by pulling off the hands,
ripped out the batteries,
which fell to the ground like spent cartridges,
then placed the signed note saying “I resign”
in the battery compartment,
clicked the cover shut,
and threw the clock.
It smashed into pieces
when it hit the closed door of the manager’s office.
Livid, he came storming out,
only to stop and gawp at the smashed clock,
his face registering shock
at losing the round shield
he’d always used to make his advance towards my desk
with another deadline-heavy piece of work.
He then looked up and saw me coming towards him,
holding the clock’s hour hand in my fist like a knife…
