Nose Bleed
One day my sister’s nose flowed
on and on through three washcloths
and a hand towel Dad told me to fetch
from the second shelf of the linen closet,
right side, rear pile,
not the new ones.
Then she spit up a chunk of blood
that looked like watermelon.
I couldn’t quite figure out
how she got it all to fir
into that white enamel bowl
under her chin.
Sis just sat there with her head back
and her cheeks shining,
me wondering
why she would have brought it out like that,
both of us certain it was our fault
Mom had left.
