Crimea
The cow’s moo and the goat’s meheh carry down
from the hills and the measured murmur of the sea
like breathing in and out goes off into the distance
until the soul appropriates the experience
of the great day and also observes
how the cloud in the boiling milk
sweetly settles in patterned foam.
It now remembers with difficulty
the completed roads beyond the long day.
It’s good here. Where else to go?
The twilight comes. The cricket has come to
and busies itself unlearning its peripatetic sound.
The pupil swims and dilates
looking into the dark-crystal horizon.
*
The wind paces on the lower branch.
There are napkins on our knees.
You eat olives and I shrimps
and together we are wonderful kids.
We drink wine, talk in poems
and we don’t know what will happen to us.
We both have families and children
but we are alone in the world.
We’d run away without permission,
had fixed ourselves a Sunday,
without a middle or continuation,
without punishment or salvation.
