Moves
Like a skip-stop express, a cracked record-
ing artist, or an often-derailed train.
It wouldn’t matter if she’d guessed
all his stage patter, his practical legerdemain.
He was her sour, patched-up doll.
She was his patronised new queen;
she made herself the perfect host,
and kept a clean space in her house.
What else could she surrender, or he gain,
after his practised, tactical
retreats, his moving in
then out, then on, then moving in again?
