Late Roses
Shaking frozen snow from the last roses
I bring them in, to the kitchen’s toast and steam,
to thaw beside the breakfast plates.
Their summer pink renews with heat
and as the petals learn to breathe again
they seem to fatten, something like the selves
they might have been before the frost.
Between the radio news and washing up
they stretch, and imperceptibly
take on the world: an earthquake’s Richter scale
translated into deaths, a Baghdad bomb,
the famine in Darfur, the price of oil.
Beyond the window’s smudge of thickening fog,
the frozen garden grows a warmer place.
