Promise
You carry your death with you –
a virus flowing through your veins.
From time to time you trace it
through the pathways in your head.
You run your finger along the edges
like a small child with a blanket
as you stare out of the window
and focus on the children playing.
You long to slip into sleep,
swallowing your life would be so easy.
And the children laugh and shout
against this backdrop.
Suicide is such a soothing word,
a whisper with a goodnight kiss.
I make you sweet black coffee.
I make you promise.
