How It All Started
I jumped at once to my feet,
but the others lay rigid on the ground,
one gazing studiously up past the thin brown leaves,
the other down through the sparse grass.
Wendy St Vincent stood looking them over,
and I stood looking at Wendy.
She looked then as she always looks,
gnarly, wide-eyed, maybe a little bit crazy.
Not ornamental like Angela Henderson
and not at all self-possessed
like Josephine Parke.
I…I’ll go with you I said, breaking the silence,
and I heard, if that’s possible, my two friends
close tight their eyes.
A moment crawled past while I stood there waiting.
Come on then Wendy St Vincent said.
I guess you’ll do.
