Platform in Space
Give me a place to stand, and I will move the earth
- Archimedes on balances and levers.
Falling becomes my father.
Floorboards thunder.
Tumblers, already signified,
come to confirmation.
The garden keeps quiet
his abrupt descents.
Unnerved,
he steers closer to me.
Hand signals go out of fashion
as unsecured objects practise take-off:
today, his glasses.
Coming in from our walk –
he is smiling –
I let go – not of his hand:
let go of the thought of him.
This time, I can’t lift him.
Find me a platform in space,
with room for me and Archimedes.
Together, we’ll lever them up –
father first,
then the world.
