Cambridge, 1948
They’d wishes me a husband
but still, it’s a Prince’s
red salmon occasion.
Mum cuts off the crusts.
Dad cracks open a bottle.
Asti Spumanti.
My big day arrives.
I swan off
in a glossy black cab
waving a gloved hand.
Going away – years
rattling behind like tin cans.
I enter a fairytale city
white as a wedding cake –
the royal icing
of King’s College Chapel.
My hand’s on the knife
for a slice of it.
Here Comes The Bride
in black cap and gown.
On our first night
she smiles from the mirror.
I kiss her, whispering
I will.
