Imperium
The water thick and grey,
dimpled by a cold
wind.
A cormorant:
black, arched, older
than the bombed
bread factory and the
grain silo which
burned unquenchably.
White wings dip and wheel,
carving acres of green-furred
concrete.
A rusted dredger ploughs the
lumpy furrows,
remnant of mysterious industries,
Victorian brick towers
blending into the distant
moors.
Clouds reel over
parked cars.
The tea is hot and the
cake sweet, the flowers
in the vases fresh and red.
Shards of water?
A shattered globe.
Broken glass.
Designed to make you feel
uncomfortable.
‘It’s nice to come here. Nice
to look out on something
nice.’
Leave.
