There Is No Love
There is no love whose name
isn’t written in sand.Like children we build
small sacred altars on the sea shore
for every love.Voices call us at night.
Those are the voices heard
only by lovers. But at night too
the perpetual, lunar sea
works its secret mechanics of waves and water,
and its mysterious engineering
wipes out the marks, prints, signs
love wrote on the sand.At dawn
the beach which wakes to a new day
is clean and pure
with a new geography.[London, March 1997]
