Room 21
Stolen key in hand
he slips through the door,
feels for the switch.
There is no light.
Crawling over the windowsill
he sits panting on the floor,
pleased to have arrived.
He frowns,
sees no furniture.
He says a last
charming word at the door,
closes it softly behind him.
The walls are bare.
With a sledgehammer
he pounds through the wall.
Coated in dust
he stands grinning
in the centre of the room.
It collapses about him.
(notes for reading:-Wear cricketing whites. Between stanzas bowl yellow and red marigold heads at audience.)
