Faith.
Mr. McAuly keeps a bag
of Scottish toffees
in his pocket
to reward those
who get their
scriptures right.
The older boys
smoke Woodbines
outside the church hall
say Mr. McAuly
likes to look
at the young boys’ willies.
After church
we creep into his garden
sit quietly under the window-sill
listen to the screams
of his mother
dying from cancer.
In Sunday class
we pass round notes
reading, thou shalt not bugger
then sit in silence as he
throws the bible away
shouts, There is no God.
