Meat and Two Veg
Undoing a button to make the most of this meal –
his weekday dinners come from the microwave,
subtleties going out the door
the way his wife did, turned cold as gravy –
he licked her dry anyway –
swallowed, slurped – took whatever was laid in front of him.
One of those men
with an old-fashioned appetite.
His auntie loves to watch him –
every Sunday scrapes the bowl like the bottom of her heart,
feels it filling back up again as he gets stuck in.
