Sometimes...
there’s this girl, or rather, these legs
plump with stripy socks swinging from a ledge
by pink and dimpled knees.
The precise swing, the exact texture
of the socks, is touchable
as a knife slicing ripe beef tomatoes
is sharp and to the point.
More often, there’s a disembodied laugh
a liquid giggle. It’s pink and feeds my inner ear
at the most unexpected moments.
Like travelling from one city to another
by train and being reminded
of sheep, of lambs, that the season
is spring and that you miss all this.
Sometimes, if I steal up, glance sideways
while facing straight ahead,
I catch a cheek
this side of a nose
a small finger dabbing paint.
Today we baked rhubarb tarts together
and her tongue smarted at the taste.
