Low Light Levels
It is mid December. A full moon
folds silver falling behind the hedge.
What is December for? The silence of horses
in afternoon fields, memories of forests, the story
that begins in the heart. A month of messages,
the wood pigeons perching in the highest boughs to get
the last of the sun, each bird hunting for food
to survive one more night. A season of carols and
wood fires and finally bells; ending, beginning,
the sound going ahead of us to recognise and resolve.
And what wounds, messages of longing, games of trust
do we take with us between carols and deciphering writing
and these last days? What heart gifts and hidden missions
and the swiftest recollections of other voices?
