Experience
One day I'll get friends to drop me off
somewhere I don't know and leave me there,
the way they do in military training.
They'll give me a six figure grid reference,
a rendezvous time and a map for the wrong area
- a real life simulation of the army.
Although it wouldn't be long before
I came across a road sign, a house at the end of a track
or a farm where I could knock someone up
I like to think I'd take my time, wander through woods
or sit in a watermeadow counting orchids and considering
a view my mind couldn't place.
What I'd hope for is to learn something important,
an insight spelt out in capital letters I could use to explain
why I was never seen again.
But I'm old enough to know some things won't happen
so it's just as well I'll have the wrong map
and my experience of the army to draw on.
