Bones of our Garden
Magnolia has stopped flowering
on the grave. Now honeysuckle
sucks our old dog’s bones.
Stones sink into his eyes,
roots wind around his paws
as earth’s black belly
swallows and digests
its precious load.
In our bodies, the years
have wrapped and re-wrapped themselves.
We cannot afford such swollen shapes.
Our joints are sore, our necks are slack.
When swooping birds descend for crusts
thrown from the husks of our hands,
I wish we still had orchids in our bones.
