Angel In The Chapel
You pull me out of silence, lead me to the place of words,
your touch cautious like robins, the thief in me, ashamed;
the Jacob, and the want. I see you through the bars of my thoughts:
pushing light with your breast, so white you started snowing,
your footfall across the distance between me and God.
I am afraid you hear what I don't say;
like words, silence thickens from the root.
We are both afraid of starting and not able to stop.
When the wrestle begins I drop everything I have in my hands:
my baby's bottle, pencil, house key.
Your beauty hits my temple merciless; the sound of wings.
It is not the pain but the fear and the doubt.
Saints recede in layers on the wall,
saying nothing: nothing of you, nothing of me.
Next time I see you I make up only the line of sorrow on your face,
you are gone into abstract. You are sculpture for the blind.
I put together snowflakes, call them 'remorse'.
I let go of what's not there, remember you with light
until my self is limping, and stone is the only word in your mouth.
