Damon
He's gone to sleep for the last time –
said the text message
from oceans away.
I remembered him shivering
when Dad brought him home,
in a blanket, and again
when he was knocked over.
My sister said that was Dad's fault.
He always had to prove his ownership.
But really, he was Mom's dog
and we all knew it.
In my flat it all seemed centuries ago,
just as the death of my parents felt
like decades away. But
probably isn't.
How we avoid these things.
We go to work, we wait,
we argue over whose dog it is.
